All over the world natural herbs have always been a part of the healer’s collection. A brief history of the healing through natural herbs will give us a peep in every nation.

• China: Emperor Shen Nung of China is known to have first ever authoritative journal named as “Canon of Herbs”. During Ming Dynasty, Li Shizen compiled “Materia Medica” which was completed in 1578.

• India: In India the medicinal use of herbs and natural products is as old as 2000 B.C. Many of the natural herbs are even a part of daily meals.

• Egypt: In 1600 B.C. “Papyrus Ebers” was published which had more than 700 names of herbs along with herbal remedies. Nearly 1000 herbs were in account of Egyptian physicians.

• Greece: Hippocrates (460-370 B.C.) was known as the father of medicine in the classical world. He referred to 300 herbs in his work.

• Europe: Nicholas Culpeper translated the entire herbal pharmacopoeia in 1653 and named it “The English Physician and Complete Herbals”.

The term “Herb” refers to any plant and any part of the plant including flowers, roots, bark, bulbs, leaves, seeds, seaweeds and ferns. It includes cooking herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables.

Herbs normally work with the inherent healing powers of the body. These herbs strengthen immunity, certain organs and systems by encouraging their action.

Herbs are ideal to use in homes as they are not hazardous and are safe to use.

The herbs and plants are needed to be prepared in a special way to use the. Their preparation requires special care as few herbs can be harmful and have toxic element in another part of plant.

Like Ginkgo Biloba is to be used only in the form of dried leaves; the parts of this tree are toxic. There are certain rules for their preparation, for example the woody herbs or barks of plants need to be boiled and decocted to form a tincture or a drink.

These procedures involve tinctures, decoctions, infusions, tisanes, compresses, poultices, powders, pills, capsules, essential oils, ointments, creams, flower essences, dilutions, teas, drinks, pastes, inhalation, diffusers, vaporizers, massages, baths, gargles, foot soaks and eye washes.

With so many side effects of some drugs these natural herbs have emerged as the best replacement to the drugs and many researchers are working day and night to prove their worth in the medicinal field.

A few herbs have proved theirselves while some are yet to be explored and has a long way to go.
